Chapter Fourteen

Kicking butt

Thankful for Kung fu

Cynics all around

“I believe we may have to revisit teaching you more hand to hand along with your elemental training,” Ms. Hullen said.

After Yellesh smacked me in the nose, Thor decided we all needed to take a break. He’d sent everyone off to the Great Hall to grab some refreshments. I stayed behind with Jen, Hudson, Ms. Hullen, and Heathe.

“Yeah, it’s kind of obvious I need it,” I said, sounding all stuffed up. I had a Kleenex stuck up my nose and my head was tilted back. My eyes finally stopped tearing up and the bleeding slowed.

“The class isn’t over yet. Do you think you’ll be able to participate?” Thor asked me.

“Yeah, I’ll be fine.”

“I’ll partner up with her and go through the basics in open and closed hand techniques,” Heathe said.

“I think at this point it may be the best option,” Thor replied.

The others returned and everyone paired off again. Heathe didn’t leave my side and Yellesh soon got the point. She threw me a look of disdain and paired off with a male centaur, the one Heathe had be sparring with earlier.

“I think she’s pissed at me,” I said as Heathe moved to stand in front of me.

“She overdid it and she knows she did. Yellesh isn’t one of the nicest Genapienes from Rifeas. She’s always had a nasty habit of being somewhat of a bully. Don’t worry about her. Let’s get to work on your self-defense skills instead,” Heathe said, moving us both a little further away from the group than I had been before.

“Rifeas, as in the world where fairies, elves, leprechauns, nymphs and trolls are from?”

“Yes, that one.”

“Are there Genapienes on all of the nineteen worlds within Nemele?” I asked.

“Not all of them. Some have environments which wouldn’t allow for them to survive. But for now, we need to concentrate on your physical responses to attacks, Jacey. You’ll learn more about all of the Nations in the next class,” Heathe said as he came to a stop where I assume he thought it was safe enough to be away from everyone else.

“So for now, we’re going to work on your physical responses, not your magical ones. I think it’s necessary you learn how to protect yourself without the use of your gifts,” Heathe said, placing his gloves on.

“So, how do I do that?

“Like this, follow me.”

Heathe approached and I backed up a little. He smirked and brought his hands up in fists to his shoulder area. He had one hand higher, up by his cheekbone while the other was down by his chin.

“Hold your hands like this. Your strong hand should be higher than your weak. You guard your face with the weak one.”

“Strong one?”

“The hand you write with.”

I tried to mirror his stance and his hand position but failed miserably.

“Here, like this…” he said, coming around behind me. He placed his hands on my hips and pulled them lower to the ground. From behind, he put his leg between mine and spread my legs further apart and pushed the right one a little bit forward.
